The Indignity Framework

Indignity is the result of “the internal and external expressions of dehumanisation, disregard, devaluation, hostility, exclusion, and forced powerlessness at personal, social, political, cultural, and institutional levels that deny the immutable, unconditional worth of negatively racialised people.”

Principles of Racial InDignity

Indignity is the violation of our humanity, of our very essence.

While dignity is typically associated with positivity, its conceptualisation has frequently been shaped by negative experiences known as indignities. These indignities encompass various actions or oversights that overlook, disrespect, or infringe upon the inherent value of individuals or groups.

The Racial indignity Framework considers how race is seen to influence how people are (In)dignified by law, policies and other institutions of power. It can be understood as the ongoing attempt to deny Black Africans of their basic human dignity and equal humanity
